The rescue operations for the MSC Baltic III in Newfoundland, Canada, are nearing their final stages. In the latest reports, the Canadian Coast Guard has announced that Resolve Marine is preparing to tow the last two sections of the ship's stern that are still remaining in the water.
Details of the Incident and Start of Rescue Operations
The cleanup operations for this ship began in the summer of 2026, approximately a year and a half after the vessel, weighing 33,767 tons, was driven ashore in the Cedar Cove area of Newfoundland due to engine failure in February 2025. This 207-meter ship, which had a capacity of 2,478 TEU, was carrying about 400 containers. Canadian forces rescued the crew without harm.

Recent Progress in Cleanup Operations
The upper sections of the ship, including the accommodation block, cargo doors, and its equipment, have been completely detached, and the upper sections of the hull have been cleared before the towing operations began. According to the latest reports, the front section of the ship has been completely transferred to shore and cleared from the beaches. Additionally, a section of the ship's stern has been towed ashore, completely destroyed, and removed from the coastline.
The rescue operations reached six heavy fuel tanks that were prioritized for environmental concerns. The Coast Guard announced that these tanks have been cleared and entered the recycling process. While oil signs are still observed in Cedar Cove, their amount has significantly decreased.
The Canadian Coast Guard and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Canada continue to monitor pollution on the shore, in the water, and through aerial flights, provided that weather conditions are suitable.
So far, Resolve has removed 9,282 tons of waste from the MSC Baltic III, which is approximately 84 percent of the ship's total weight. After the rescue operations are completed, final cleanup of the seabed and beaches in Cedar Cove will be conducted, and Resolve has also committed to restoring the beaches as the final stage of the rescue operations.
