Petrobras, the Brazilian state energy giant, has signed a 20-year contract with Sempra Infrastructure to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) from a developing project in Jefferson County, Texas.
Contract Details
Sempra Infrastructure has signed a 20-year sales and purchase agreement (SPA) with Petrobras to supply approximately 0.8 million tons per year (mtpa) of LNG. This gas will be sourced from the contracted gas supply capacity of the developer in the Phase 2 LNG project at Port Arthur, which is currently under construction.
Justin Bird, CEO of Sempra Infrastructure, stated: "We are pleased to see Petrobras as the first South American company in our LNG customer portfolio. This is an important milestone for Sempra's growing LNG business. This long-term agreement establishes a strategic relationship with one of the leading companies in the global energy industry and emphasizes Sempra's important role in supplying natural gas from the United States to customers around the world."
Developing Projects and Production Capacity
The Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 project, with two gas supply units capable of producing about 13 mtpa of LNG, will increase the gas supply capacity from Phase 1 to approximately 26 mtpa. The project received a positive final investment decision in September 2025. Meanwhile, Phase 1 of this project is also under construction and is expected to reach commercial operation by the end of 2027 or early 2028.
Phase 2 of Port Arthur is also expected to reach commercial operation in 2030 and 2031. Sempra has emphasized that this project contributes to strategic access to the rich natural gas resource areas of the United States, strong midstream connections, and scalable infrastructure.
Sempra has also announced: "The Port Arthur LNG project, as one of the cornerstones of Sempra's two-coast strategy, will play a vital role in expanding access to reliable and dependable natural gas resources from the United States for customers in Atlantic and Pacific markets."
Petrobras is actively working to expand its energy portfolio across multiple geographies, as evidenced by its recent entry into eight offshore blocks in Côte d'Ivoire.
