Petrobras, Brazil's state energy giant, has successfully obtained an Approval in Principle (AiP) from Lloyd's Register for its Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) concept. This advancement is part of a redevelopment plan that adapts the proven FPSO P-68 design to reduce risk, cost, and delivery time in Brazil's Santos basin.

Impact of the Approval on the REVIT I TUPI Project

Lloyd's Register has granted initial approval to Petrobras for the conceptual design of the FPSO REVIT I TUPI, describing it as a significant step in the operator's strategy to leverage proven offshore production assets to support the development of future fields in Brazil. This endorsement supports Petrobras's Tupi field redevelopment project (REVIT I TUPI) and reflects the industry's increasing focus on adapting FPSO designs to expedite project delivery, reduce development risk, and improve capital efficiency.

Emphasis on Safety and Efficiency

As project costs, delivery schedules, and execution risks are under continuous review, the classification society emphasizes that adapting existing FPSO designs is emerging as a practical pathway to introduce new offshore production capacity while ensuring safety and performance. Petrobras serves as a strong example of this approach in the REVIT I TUPI project, and our assessment builds independent confidence in this concept as it progresses.

The initial approval confirms that Lloyd's review of the preliminary design documentation identified no conceptual issues with industry reference requirements and concluded that this concept is capable of developing into a safe and viable design in later stages of engineering and project development. This concept includes a comprehensive set of process engineering documentation, including process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, equipment specifications, and supporting technical studies.

Lloyd's review also examined the design change management methodology and ensured that changes from the original configuration of FPSO P-68 can be identified, assessed, and implemented throughout the project lifecycle.

This initial approval marks a significant milestone in the collaboration between Petrobras and Lloyd's Register. We are pleased to support Petrobras at this stage of the REVIT I TUPI project and hope our collaboration continues in the later stages of project development.
