Mustafa Motedin has been appointed as the new CEO of Esteghlal Club, concluding Ali Tajernia's interim leadership at the club. This change has raised many questions regarding the management background, expertise, and familiarity of the newly appointed manager with professional football.
Motedin's Management Background
Motedin, who joined the Esteghlal Board of Directors in the summer of 2026, was selected as CEO just a few days after the introduction of the new board members by the club's management. Tajernia will continue his role as the chairman of the board. With this appointment, Esteghlal sees a manager at the helm of its executive structure whose professional path, unlike many previous club managers, has not been through football but rather through large industries, project management, and economic activities.

Throughout his career, Motedin has held numerous responsibilities in the fields of construction, oil, and petrochemicals, and in media introductions, he has been noted to hold a PhD in business management with a focus on oil and gas. A significant part of Motedin's management background is linked to his collaboration with the specialized holding of the Khatam al-Anbiya Construction Headquarters; a group involved in major construction, industrial, and infrastructure projects.
Challenges and Opportunities at Esteghlal
Having been the CEO of the Khatam holding for about a decade, Motedin has dealt with projects in oil, refineries, petrochemicals, railways, dam construction, and port development during this time. However, much of this experience has been shaped in an environment where the rules and priorities differ from managing a football club.
His experience in managing multi-billion-dollar projects and large petrochemical projects demonstrates his managerial capabilities. However, managing Esteghlal will be his first direct experience in professional football. His selection as CEO can be seen as a sign of the club owner's desire to utilize a manager familiar with the economic, financial, and executive structures of the Persian Gulf holding.
Nevertheless, there is a need for specialized knowledge of the football environment and the ability to form a specialized team to manage various sections of the club. Ultimately, Motedin's performance in resource management, key decisions, and creating conditions for the team's success will be the main criteria for judging his capabilities.
