The eighth meeting of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Moscow was dedicated to discussing energy security and the development of gas cooperation among member countries. This meeting took place under the circumstances of global energy market developments and the role of natural gas in the future energy mix of the world being key topics of discussion. Members of this forum emphasized the sovereign rights of countries to exploit natural resources and the necessity of protecting energy infrastructure.

Main Topics of the Meeting

In this meeting, the leaders of member countries emphasized the importance of supply security and investment in gas infrastructure. Additionally, members expressed their opposition to unilateral coercive measures. This issue is particularly significant in the current global energy market, which is influenced by various factors including sanctions and price fluctuations.

Iran-Russia Bilateral Cooperation

On the sidelines of this meeting, the topic of Iran-Russia bilateral cooperation in gas trade was also addressed. Hamid Bourd, CEO of the National Iranian Oil Company, announced the general agreements between the two countries in this regard. Given the position of Iran and Russia in global gas reserves and production, the establishment of a sustainable mechanism for gas trade between the two countries could have an impact beyond a bilateral agreement on regional cooperation and the gas market structure.

If the ongoing agreements and negotiations between Iran and Russia regarding gas trade reach a final outcome, it could strengthen economic and political relations between the two countries. Although this cooperation is still in the negotiation stage and should not be considered a finalized contract, there are hopes for the establishment of a sustainable and effective collaboration in this area.
