Major Japanese shipping companies, including three main groups, have approved a new design for a carbon carrier with a capacity of 42,000 cubic meters. This project is aimed at creating a common platform for ships that can be repeatedly built in Japanese factories and will end the development of specific ships for separate CCS projects.

Details of the New Carbon Carrier Design

The 42,000 cubic meter design has been specifically examined with studies identifying hazards associated with low-pressure CO2 operations. This design leverages the operational experiences of gas carriers from the major Japanese shipping groups. The approval of this design is the first tangible result from the MILES standard design framework that was launched by the companies last year.

Increasing Demand for CO2 Transportation

Japan anticipates that demand for LCO2 transportation will rise as domestic CCS projects move toward commercial operation, necessitating the transfer of carbon captured from industrial centers to marine storage sites and potentially abroad. Standardization has become an important issue for the emerging CO2 transportation industry. The size of ships, load pressure, tank materials, and loading infrastructure are still significantly less than in mature uniform gas transportation markets.

Japanese companies believe that adopting common specifications can reduce engineering workload, improve construction efficiency, and enable factories to produce LCO2 carriers in larger numbers. This group had previously developed low-pressure designs of 23,000 and 50,000 cubic meters, but this new ship is the first example produced through the new MILES framework.
