Maersk is recognized as the largest operator in the container shipping market within Asia. This Danish company, with over 340,000 TEU in domestic Asia services in mid-August, has successfully increased by 34,000 TEU compared to last year.
Significant Growth of Maersk
The growth of Maersk is attributed to the hub-and-spoke model of the Gemini collaboration, which relies on a large network of shuttle services in Asia. The company has deployed 108 ships in this region, with an average ship size of 3,176 TEU, the largest ship size among prominent domestic operators in Asia.

Changes in Operator Rankings
While COSCO is operating with over 120 ships, it has fallen to second place due to the stagnation of its fleet capacity compared to last year. According to Alphaliner, the total capacity deployed in international services within Asia has dropped below 2.6 million TEU, which is a 6.2 percent increase compared to last year. More than 80 operators are competing in this market.
Main operators control 63 percent of the deployed capacity, despite having fewer ships than regional specialists. This is because their average ship size is 2,699 TEU, while for regional operators, this figure is 1,338 TEU.
CMA CGM has climbed to third place by adding 15,000 TEU to its capacity, surpassing Evergreen. SITC is also recognized as a leader among regional specialists, operating 109 ships and approximately 157,000 TEU.
The Drewry Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI) increased by 1 percent last week, reaching $1,323 per FEU. This index has hit its highest level in history this month, reflecting geopolitical disruptions and recent storms that have impacted supply chains and limited available capacities.
