Kazem Jalali, Iran's ambassador to Russia, emphasized the importance of the eighth summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), which will be held on October 27, 2026, in Moscow, regarding the strategic synergy between Iran and Russia. This summit is held on the occasion of the quarter-century anniversary of the GECF and is recognized as a historical milestone in energy developments.
The Role of the GECF Summit in Energy Market Stability
The GECF leaders' summit is set to review and draft the "Moscow Development-Oriented Statement." This statement is proposed as a geopolitical platform to enhance the self-reliance of members and transfer modern technologies in the energy sector. Kazem Jalali announced that the presence of key leaders from global gas powers at this summit will solidify the role of natural gas as a cornerstone of energy stability in the 21st century.

According to Jalali, the convergence of GECF member countries, which collectively hold 70% of the world's proven gas reserves, affects sustainable energy security on a macro level. This summit is taking place amid global markets under pressure from unilateral sanctions, with the GECF serving as a legal mechanism to protect the sovereign rights of countries over their natural resources.
Development of Iran-Russia Energy Relations
Jalali referred to the major agreements between Iran and Russia aimed at connecting regional networks and enhancing gas transit. Iran, as the second-largest holder of natural gas with 33.9 trillion cubic meters of reserves, and Russia, with 47.8 trillion cubic meters as the largest holder of these resources, together possess over 41% of the world's total gas reserves. These collaborations enable Iran to become a key gas distribution hub in South Asia.
Analysis of trends indicates that joint cooperation between Iran and Russia can help effectively manage the global gas market. The joint approaches of these two countries at the GECF summit will guarantee previous agreements and serve as a key step in neutralizing the effects of sanctions. Jalali concluded by stating that the future of the global gas market should be shaped based on resource diversity and respect for the sovereignty of suppliers.
