Iran's oil production reached 1.9 million barrels per day in September 2026, indicating a decrease of 99,000 barrels per day compared to the previous month. This production decline is due to export restrictions and international sanctions that have impacted supply and demand.

Review of Iran's Oil Production Status

According to international reports, including from the International Energy Agency, the total crude oil supply from OPEC members in September 2026 reached 21.15 million barrels per day, indicating a significant increase of 1.89 million barrels per day compared to August. Despite this overall increase, Iran faced a decline of 220,000 barrels in its production, dropping from 2.16 million barrels per day in August to 1.94 million barrels per day.

Potential of Iran's Oil Production

Despite the production decline, the International Energy Agency estimates Iran's sustainable crude oil production capacity at 3.80 million barrels per day. Thus, there is significant untapped production potential should market conditions change. Additionally, compared to other oil-producing countries, Saudi Arabia has increased its production by 2.33 million barrels to 8.30 million barrels per day, while Iraq has also seen a growth of 520,000 barrels to 4.10 million barrels per day.

Iran's oil production in the third quarter of 2026 reached 2 million and 168 thousand barrels per day, experiencing a downward trend compared to previous quarters. While in January of this year, oil production reached 3.4 million barrels per day, it is now close to the export levels at that time.

Overall, statistics provided by international agencies and secondary sources indicate a continuous decline in Iran's oil production. This is particularly due to sanctions and challenges in export routes that have led to restrictions on the country's crude oil supply.
