Water Challenges and the Need for Autumn Cultivation

The expansion of autumn sugar beet cultivation has become a necessity due to the reduction of agricultural water resources. While the sugar beet production policy in Iran faces serious challenges, increasing the cultivation area without reforming the timing and method of production cannot meet the needs of the sugar industry. Therefore, increasing the autumn cultivation area to 44,000 hectares and targeting 60,000 hectares by the end of the seventh program has created a new pathway for the sugar chain.

According to estimates, this cultivation could produce 340,000 tons of sugar, covering about 15% of the country's annual requirement of 2.2 million tons. Given the 21% reduction in water resources available for agriculture, the need to change cultivation patterns and improve efficiency is felt more than ever.

Collaboration of Farmers and Factory Capacity

The development of autumn cultivation to 44,000 hectares will not be possible without sufficient industrial capacity and coordination with farmers. Sugar beets must be transferred to factories at the right time after harvest, which directly impacts production costs. Therefore, collaboration between farmers and factories to meet the needs of this cultivation is very important.

In this regard, farmers need economic incentives, including product purchase prices, guaranteed receipt of beets, and access to suitable seeds. Although autumn cultivation can help improve the current conditions, without planning for the purchase and processing of the product, these efforts may not yield the desired results.

Conclusion and Future Outlook

Ultimately, self-sufficiency in sugar depends on water efficiency. Considering the country's annual sugar requirement of 2.2 million tons, maintaining domestic production will help reduce dependence on imports. If autumn cultivation is accompanied by efficiency and economic incentives for farmers, it can serve as an effective solution to combat the country's water scarcity.

The development of this method should be carried out with consideration of the climatic capacity of each region and necessary support, so that water efficiency and economic performance are maximized. Otherwise, increasing the area under cultivation without regard to water consumption and product performance may lead to adverse results.
