DP World and Arctic Gateway signed an agreement to develop an integrated transportation corridor at the Port of Churchill, Canada. This agreement is in line with the support from local and federal governments to create new international business opportunities for Canada.
Details of the Agreement
Under the terms of this agreement, Arctic Gateway, which is responsible for the Port of Churchill and the Hudson Bay Railway, will collaborate with DP World and CentrePort to develop the transportation corridor. Transformation in Port of Churchill Operations
Officials at the Port of Churchill report on the progress made in revitalizing port operations. They point out that the Port of Churchill is currently handling the widest range of goods in its history. Following investments to restore port and railway facilities, this port is now capable of handling critical minerals, grains, and potash, providing an important position for shipping northern resources to the Indigenous community of Nunavut.
In September, the Port of Churchill received its first grain shipments since 2020. Nearly 30,000 tons of Canadian durum wheat supplied by AGT Foods based in Saskatchewan were loaded at the Port of Churchill and shipped to customers in Europe. The Arctic Gateway group emphasizes that it is in active discussions to attract private sector investments, and studies have shown that the Port of Churchill could support annual operations with the current generation of icebreaker ships.
CentrePoint has reported that it has attracted approximately CAD 1.5 billion in private investment. This entity also notes that over 1,000 companies have developed in the area, and more than 3.5 million square feet of industrial space has been built or is under construction in the past eight years.
With the expansion of its access in Canada, DP World is currently moving over one million TEU annually in the country and is operating at the Rupert Port in the west while collaborating in the development of the Port of Montreal. The federal government is also supporting this development and is looking to expedite the expansion of the port to create new international opportunities.
