The MSC Victorine cargo ship was damaged on October 25, 2023, due to a collision with the Mein Schiff 3 cruise ship in Bremerhaven, Germany. The incident took place at 5:30 PM during stormy conditions caused by Storm Mania.

Details of the Collision

The MSC Victorine, flying the Liberian flag and with a capacity of 16,520 TEU, was docking at the container terminal at the time of the incident. The Mein Schiff 3 cruise ship, weighing 99,526 tons, collided with the rear of the cargo ship while leaving the Columbuskaje terminal with the assistance of tugboats. This collision resulted in a roughly 10-meter tear in the hull of the MSC above the waterline, and damages to containers and deck structures have also been reported.

Consequences of the Collision

Bremer port authorities confirmed that there was no water ingress into the MSC Victorine. However, several lifeboats and their related equipment on the Mein Schiff 3 were also damaged. Bremen police stated that the cruise ship collided with two cargo ships, but TUI Cruises claims that only one ship was involved in the incident. The smaller cargo ship MSC Anne F was also docked nearby, but its role in this collision is still unclear.

The MSC Victorine, which was supposed to head to Hamburg, remained in Bremerhaven after the collision. The Mein Schiff 3 cruise ship, carrying 2,428 passengers and 922 crew members, returned to the Columbuskaje terminal with the help of tugboats to assess the damages. Fortunately, no injuries to individuals have been reported.

This incident has also cast uncertainty over the ship's 20-night voyage to the Canary Islands and Morocco, and TUI Cruises has not yet confirmed whether this trip will be possible. Bremen maritime police have begun their investigation into the collision, and the exact cause and full extent of the damages are still unknown.
