Verlume, a leading underwater power technology company based in the UK, and SubCtech, a German marine technology company, have combined their resources to develop and deliver integrated underwater power solutions. The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate in this area and have announced a joint commitment to deepen cooperation and explore new business opportunities in the energy and marine defense sectors.
Combining Complementary Expertise
The aforementioned memorandum of understanding combines two complementary areas of expertise. This collaboration includes the integration of Verlume's proven underwater power platform and its smart systems integration capabilities with SubCtech's established expertise in developing and producing high-performance battery systems for marine and underwater environments. At the core of the British company's technology is the Axonn platform, described as a smart control and orchestration layer that integrates power, communications, and control within a unified architecture.
Creating Integrated Solutions for Marine Projects
SubCtech's battery technology and manufacturing capabilities can be integrated through collaboration within this broad architecture. This creates greater flexibility in how underwater power systems are configured to meet the needs of specific projects. David Clark, CEO of Verlume, stated: "The next generation of underwater infrastructure requires more than just standalone equipment. Continuous marine operations increasingly demand power, energy storage, communications, and control to function as an integrated system."
This collaboration can also provide customers with flexible, reliable, and fully integrated solutions for complex underwater applications. The companies intend to work together at the system level, thus treating battery technology not as an independent component. This ensures that battery technology can be easily integrated with customers' underwater equipment.
Focus on the Oil and Gas Industry
The collaboration between Verlume and SubCtech is particularly focused on the offshore oil and gas industry, where operators are increasingly seeking integrated and reliable power solutions to support aging underwater infrastructure, field longevity, and automated operations. Stephen Marx, CTO of SubCtech, stated: "Verlume and SubCtech have highly complementary capabilities. By combining our experience in advanced battery technology and manufacturing with Verlume's underwater power platform, strong opportunities arise to provide integrated solutions to customers."
This partnership also enables both organizations to address the growing demand for sustainable and reliable underwater power based on their experiences in marine energy, maritime, and defense markets.
