CMA CGM, one of the largest shipping companies, has announced that it has selected Wärtsilä 34DF engines for its 12 new container ships. This choice was made due to the high fuel efficiency and reliable performance of this engine under various load conditions. Wärtsilä 34DF engines provide a sophisticated platform for large vessels, offering lower lifecycle and maintenance costs.
Benefits of Using Wärtsilä 34DF Engines
The Wärtsilä 34DF engine is considered a clean fuel option with low emissions, making it suitable for marine operators deep at sea. Given that CMA CGM currently has over 160 Wärtsilä 34DF engines in its fleet, the company has decided to continue utilizing this technology for new ships. This engine, with its ability to deliver high efficiency, significantly helps reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
Future Outlook and the Need for Energy Efficiency Improvement
With the advancement of regulatory frameworks and rising fuel costs, improving energy efficiency has become one of the most effective ways to reduce operational emissions and manage lifecycle costs. The Wärtsilä 34DF engine platform, supported by continuous technology development and extensive fleet experience, helps ships maintain their competitive efficiency performance over the long term.
According to Stephen Nisbet, Vice President of Energy Supply, "Customers are looking for solutions that provide high fuel efficiency and reduced emissions with alternative fuels such as LNG." This engine, as a proven platform, offers reliable LNG operations supported by extensive fleet experience.
In addition to 36 engines, Wärtsilä will also supply its sealing systems and bearings, including the Airguard® sealing system. These systems will assist in pollution-free sealing and oil collection in the aft and forward tubes.
The mentioned equipment is scheduled for delivery to the factory starting in 2027.
