Britain approved the Jackdaw gas field located in the North Sea on October 21, 2023. This decision comes after years of legal and political disputes and aims to balance environmental goals with the country's energy security needs. Britain's Energy Minister, Myata Fahnbul, announced that the project will start supplying gas by the end of this month and will help reduce energy costs that have risen due to the war in Iran.

Details of the Jackdaw Gas Field

The Jackdaw field can produce about 40,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day at peak production, which accounts for approximately 4 percent of Britain's daily gas demand. This field will be active for 11 years, and the British government has described it as a “source of national power” during a time of global instability. Prime Minister Andy Burnham emphasized the need for responsible use of existing energy resources in Britain.

Economic and Environmental Implications

The decision to establish the Jackdaw field comes at a time when rising energy prices have put significant pressure on households and businesses, and Burnham has repeatedly called for expanded drilling in the North Sea. This project is also part of the UK government's efforts to maintain its commitments on climate change, although the establishment of a new field like Jackdaw has faced severe criticism from the Green Party as “climate destructive.”

The government also announced that a new energy wealth fund will be established with an initial investment of £2 billion ($2.7 billion) to direct revenues from oil and gas towards the transition to clean energy. This move reflects Britain's commitment to its climate goals, despite the establishment of new gas projects.

While the Jackdaw field is considered an important project, the status of the Rosebank gas field, which is expected to produce 70,000 barrels per day, is still awaiting a decision. Fahnbul emphasized that the Jackdaw field is primarily designed to meet Britain's domestic needs, while Rosebank is more related to exports.
