The liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier named Al-Mida was targeted by gunfire near the Strait of Hormuz on Friday. This incident occurred while Pakistan had previously negotiated with Iran to ensure the safe passage of this vessel.

Details of the Incident and Reactions

The Al-Mida, sailing under the Marshall Islands flag, was carrying a cargo of liquefied natural gas from Qatar. According to informed sources, Iranian officials had agreed to the passage of this vessel just hours before the incident occurred. However, after being targeted, the ship changed course towards the Persian Gulf.

India's Shipping Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, confirmed that all 25 crew members of the ship, including six Indian nationals, are safe. Additionally, Qatar Gas Transport Company announced on Sunday that the ship was hit but remains operational, and its condition is under assessment.

Consequences of This Incident for Pakistan

This incident once again highlights the dangers facing vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz. Pakistan, which is facing an energy shortage due to recent developments in the Middle East, may have to turn to the global market at higher prices if it does not receive this shipment. Prices in this market are more than three times the pre-war level.

Last month, Pakistan had discussions with Iranian officials regarding the security of several other liquefied natural gas shipments from Qatar, all of which successfully passed through the Strait of Hormuz and entered the Sea of Oman. Meanwhile, the flow of LNG exports from the Strait of Hormuz in October remains around 30 percent of the pre-war level.

Since September, Qatar has continuously resumed LNG exports from this waterway and is using older vessels to reduce insurance costs. This event indicates that new challenges lie ahead for Pakistan and other countries in the region, highlighting the need for increased security measures.
