A.P. Moller-Maersk, the largest publicly traded shipping company, presented a positive financial report showing a 27% increase in annual revenue to over $18 billion and a 75% increase in profit (EBITDA). However, this news failed to attract investors, and the company's stock value dropped by 6.4%, more than double the average decline of the Dow Jones.
Positive Performance Across Various Sectors
Maersk highlighted its ability to convert market opportunities into higher revenue in its public statements, emphasizing strong performance across all three of its business sectors. The company's shipping operations experienced strong rates due to capacity constraints from congestion, although the volume of cargo transported has decreased. Waiting times in this sector reached 16.6 hours, the highest level since January 2023. Nevertheless, demand for cargo transportation remained high, and spot rates surged by 46% at their peak this season. Fleet utilization also remained above 96%.

Challenges and Future Outlook
CEO Vincent Clerc pointed to challenges such as declining exports from Asia due to weather issues and slowing demand growth in Europe. However, he provided an optimistic message, highlighting investments in AI infrastructure, digitization, and energy as drivers for industrial transportation. Clerc predicted that this sector could continue to grow stronger compared to consumer goods.
Maersk also raised its outlook for the coming years, forecasting that 2026 may become a year of no growth or decline, which could lead to financial losses. The company has roughly doubled the lower end of its EBIT profit forecasts and increased its EBITDA forecast by 16% to 33%, reaching a range of $14 to $14.5 billion for the current year.
Despite the strong statements, the figures presented were lower than analysts' forecasts, and the increase in forecasts appeared less favorable compared to other companies in the industry. Clerc stated in an interview with a media outlet that analysts had quickly outpaced the market, while the company expected the market to respond to its strong results in the second quarter.
