50Hertz Signs New Contract for LanWin3 Project
50Hertz, the German transmission system operator, has signed a contract for the construction of an offshore converter station for the LanWin3 offshore grid connection project in the North Sea with Neptun Smulders Offshore Renewables. The contract value related to Neptun Smulders for two offshore converter platforms is approximately 2.5 billion euros (equivalent to 2.87 billion dollars).
Details of the LanWin3 Project
This project is designed to safely integrate large volumes of offshore wind energy from the North Sea into the German power grid. Specifically, the LanWin3 converter station, along with the LanWin6 converter station, for which the contract was signed in June, will be established as part of efforts to strengthen energy transmission capabilities in Germany.
In this project, Siemens Energy will be responsible for supplying high-voltage components for the LanWin3 project. Project partners are responsible for the complete execution and final delivery of the facilities, which includes the overall system design, component supply, construction and installation onshore and offshore, and system commissioning.
Key Components and Structure
The key components of this project will be built at the Warnemünde shipyard, where main components such as the upper structure and main building of the offshore platform will be produced. Additionally, Smulders will manufacture the steel structure infrastructure known as the "jacket" at its facility in Wierden, Netherlands.
Stefan Kapferer, CEO of 50Hertz, stated: "With the LanWin3 and LanWin6 projects, we are providing the necessary conditions for the safe integration of large volumes of offshore wind energy from the North Sea into the German power grid." This project is considered an important step towards securing renewable energy in Germany and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Connection of Stations and Its Impacts
The two converter stations will be connected via the HVDC NordOstLink transmission corridor and a multi-intermediate hub in Heide, Schleswig-Holstein. This improvement in energy transmission infrastructure will contribute to increased reliability and efficiency of the German power grid and will also facilitate the transfer of energy from renewable sources to end consumers.
