The U.S. intelligence community has warned European countries about the possibility of Russia attempting unexpected provocations. These provocations may include the use of maritime drones to intimidate and threaten countries located in the Mediterranean. This information has been obtained from a diplomat close to the matter.
Details of Potential Attacks
According to received information, Russia may use Gerbera-type drones that can be launched from cargo ships. These drones are small enough to be easily transported in shipping containers. Reports indicate that these drones can target objectives deep within European countries and send threatening messages.

The warnings particularly concern Spain, France, and Italy, which may be targeted. These drones, loaded with light explosives, although unable to cause deep damage to infrastructure, can significantly increase public fear and concern in these countries.
Background of Russian Threats
Russia has previously used similar tactics to create disruption and fear in Europe. In September 2025, suspicious drone attacks from ships were observed at Copenhagen Airport. Also, that same year, violations of Polish airspace by Russian drones were reported, indicating an increase in this country's aerial activities.
Defense analysts like Keir Giles believe that Spain, southern France, and Italy are softer targets for such attacks compared to NATO frontline countries. Meanwhile, neighboring countries of Russia have been forced to strengthen their defenses. In August, a quadcopter drone loaded with explosives was discovered at Leipzig Airport, seemingly intended to harm Ukrainian military aircraft in Germany.
In light of these threats, European countries must quickly take necessary measures to counter such attacks. This situation clearly highlights the need to strengthen defense and security cooperation at the regional level.
