Turkey has postponed the deployment of the floating production platform Osman Ghazi from the port of Filyos to late October 2023. This production platform is set to be transferred to the Sakarya gas field in the Black Sea and is expected to create significant advancements in the country's gas production.

Details of the Delay in the Deployment of Osman Ghazi

The Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, had previously announced that this production platform was to leave Filyos by the end of September 2023 and be operational in the fourth quarter. However, due to delays, this production platform is now expected to reach the Sakarya field by the end of 2026, with its first gas to be flared before the end of this year.

The Role of Osman Ghazi in Gas Production

The Osman Ghazi platform is designed to increase the daily production of the Sakarya field by 10 million cubic meters, bringing the total production of the field to about 20 million cubic meters per day. Bayraktar also stated that the combined gas production volume could meet the needs of approximately 8 million households.

The Turkish Minister of Energy emphasized that this floating production platform will contribute $3.5 billion annually to the country's economy. He estimated the daily production value of this new platform at nearly $10 million at current gas prices.

About 7,000 workers are currently completing the final preparation stages of the Osman Ghazi platform in Filyos. This work includes the installation of 642 kilometers of electrical cables and nearly 30 kilometers of piping, with the process currently progressing at a rate of 6 kilometers of cable per day.

Upon completion of the commissioning stages, this platform will support the second phase of the Sakarya field development. Turkey has also announced plans to add a second floating production platform in 2028, which could increase the field's production to 45 million cubic meters per day and help meet the needs of approximately 17 million households.

Earlier this month, a report was released stating that the Italian marine engineering contractor Saipem has signed a contract with GOE Petrol Sanayi to launch the country's first floating gas production platform. This contract will last for eight months.
