The administration of Donald Trump, the President of the United States, announced that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to an "energy ceasefire" that will be implemented immediately. This announcement was made on Sunday, while Trump emphasized the necessity of adhering to this agreement on his social media platform, "Truth Social," without providing further details about it.

Previous details and criticisms

This agreement is announced at a time when Trump had once again urged Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, to stop attacks on Russian oil refineries and suggested that it might be better for him to resign from his position. At the same time, Trump has faced severe criticism due to an agreement he made with Russia for the export of its diesel to global markets.

Trump had previously mentioned the energy ceasefire last month, but Zelensky later announced that no final agreement had been reached and the war continued. This new announcement came after Zelensky called for more pressure on Russia to end the war in a television interview.

Consequences of the war and attacks on infrastructure

The war between Russia and Ukraine has now entered its fifth year, and in the latest attacks, at least 20 people lost their lives due to a Russian attack on residential buildings in Ukraine. Zelensky also emphasized that Ukraine is ready to initiate the energy ceasefire if Russia agrees to de-escalate tensions.

In response to Trump's announcement, Zelensky stated that Ukraine supports the ceasefire and emphasized that Russia must also support it. He also added that Ukraine is awaiting more details from the United States.

This comes as seven U.S. senators, including four Republicans and three Democrats, issued a statement pointing out the illegality of this agreement, as Congress has banned Russian energy imports since 2022. They also emphasized that Trump's decision to allow Russian diesel imports directly contradicts this law.

Ukraine's attacks on Russian refineries and other energy assets led Moscow to impose a temporary ban on the export of most diesel, jet fuel, and gasoline in July, which has recently been extended until October.
