The tanker Acers, sailing under the flag of Antigua and Barbuda, was hit by several missiles on October 7, 2023, approximately 51 nautical miles north of Medina Ash Shamal, Qatar. The attack occurred around 1900 UTC, and reports indicate casualties among the crew of the tanker. However, no further details have been released regarding the number of injured or deceased and the types of weapons used in the attack.

Concerning position of the attack

This attack comes at a time when most recent attacks on commercial shipping have been concentrated near the Strait of Hormuz. The occurrence of this incident in the Persian Gulf, which is significantly farther from these disputed waters, has heightened concerns about the risks facing tankers in these areas. Particularly, this attack occurs as violence against commercial shipping has significantly increased in recent weeks.

Reports indicate that at least 12 tankers have been attacked between September 28 and October 5, marking this week as the most severe week of tanker attacks since the onset of the war with Iran in February. Additionally, some of these attacks involved tankers being struck by unidentified missiles while transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

Security and commercial implications

Recent attacks have also followed Iran's threats to intensify its control over shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, particularly the southern routes near Oman. Iranian officials have threatened to take action against vessels using unauthorized routes. Meanwhile, the United States continues its efforts to facilitate commercial passage through this waterway.

Despite these efforts, recent attacks highlight the difficulties that shipowners and operators face in trying to restore normal trading patterns in the Persian Gulf. The attack on the tanker Acers is particularly concerning as it indicates that the threat to commercial shipping is not limited to vessels entering or exiting the Persian Gulf, but that tankers already operating within the Gulf may also be at risk.

The UKMTO has not yet attributed this attack on the tanker Acers to any group, and investigations into the incident are ongoing. Additionally, vessels operating in the area have been advised to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity.
