The Liberian-flagged Aframax Rio tanker was attacked by one or more Ukrainian drones near the shores of Sochi, Russia, on October 6, 2026. This incident has been confirmed by Russian authorities as a "terrorist operation." The fire resulting from this attack was brought under control in less than 24 hours, and all 23 Indian crew members of the tanker were safely evacuated.
Status of the Tanker and Rescue Efforts
According to the Russian Ministry of Transport, the fire was brought under control shortly after it started, and no injuries among the crew have been reported. However, images from the night of the incident show that burning oil was visible on the surface of the water. Environmental inspectors in Sochi quickly began monitoring water and air quality, and public beaches near the incident site were closed as a precautionary measure.
Environmental Consequences and Public Concerns
The non-governmental organization Greenpeace has warned that this attack could lead to unprecedented pollution in the Black Sea and the destruction of marine ecosystems. The organization has stated that the threats posed by Russian oil could harm the people of Russia and the environment of the entire Black Sea region. Sochi's mayor, Andrey Poroshin, has urged residents to remain calm and adhere to the imposed restrictions.
The current status of the tanker rescue is unclear, and unofficial images shared on social media show that the tanker is tilting to the right. Meanwhile, the tanker has been reported to be moving and shifting along the Lazarevsky coast.
This attack is the second drone operation in Sochi in the past month, following an attack on September 9 that damaged a public beach and injured 30 people. Both sides, Ukraine and Russia, have extensively used drone technology to attack vessels with civilian crews. Recently, a Russian drone attack sank a Turkish commercial ship off the coast of Bulgaria, killing 10 foreign crew members.
