Transworld Shipping Lines has successfully purchased two container ships worth $42.78 million from a related group with the approval of its shareholders. This move is considered a key step in the company's fleet modernization in the Navi Mumbai region of India.
Details of the Ship Purchase
The purchased ships include OEL Surya and OEL Varun, both built in 2006. The value of the OEL Surya ship is set at $22.03 million, while the OEL Varun is valued at $20.75 million. This transaction will be carried out through Transworld's subsidiary, Transworld Sea-Connect IFSC.
Date and Approval Stages
This purchase was approved by the Transworld board on September 7, 2023, and was contingent upon shareholder approval and any other necessary permits. The mentioned ships are currently in commercial operation, providing Transworld with an existing revenue stream while the ships are transferred to the company's subsidiaries.
This action is part of a series of purchases and sales that Transworld is undertaking to modernize its fleet portfolio. Earlier this month, the company agreed to purchase the Saltwind Explorer ship, built in 2011, for $16.5 million. Additionally, in September, Transworld secured a $9.25 million contract to sell the TBC Kailash ship to Mandarine Ocean.
Implications of the New Purchases
Transworld has continued to maintain its ship ownership and dry cargo businesses since 2021 when Unifeeder, owned by DP World, acquired the group's coastal and feeder operations. Recent purchases represent a transfer of existing tonnage among related entities and do not signify an addition to the broader controlling group's fleet.
Overall, these developments reflect Transworld's efforts to strengthen its position in the shipping market and improve financial performance through fleet optimization. Given the ongoing changes in the shipping industry, these actions may help Transworld better prepare for future challenges.
