TotalEnergies, the French energy giant, and its partner AMNI have made the final investment decision (FID) for the development of the Ima gas field in Nigeria. This gas field, located near Bonny Island, includes offshore licenses OML 112 and 117 and is considered a significant project for energy supply in Nigeria.

Details of the Ima Gas Field Project

The Ima gas field is situated in shallow waters close to Bonny Island, and its development will be carried out with a single platform. This platform will be connected to the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (Nigeria LNG) plant via a 22-kilometer pipeline, of which TotalEnergies owns 15 percent. Production from this field is expected to begin in 2028, gradually reaching a production level of 10 million cubic meters per day, equivalent to over 60,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

Impacts on Other Projects and Local Community

Once the Ima field is operational, it will supply about one-third of the gas needed for the expansion of Nigeria LNG's Train 7 project. This project aims to increase the liquefaction plant's capacity from 22 million tons per year to 30 million tons per year.

The development plan for the Ima field is designed as a low-cost and low greenhouse gas emissions project. It utilizes simple platform designs, power supply from the shore, no gas flaring, and permanent methane detection and monitoring systems. All key contractors working on this project are local companies, and it is expected that about 60 percent of the required workforce will come from local communities.

Nicolas Terraz, President of Exploration and Production at TotalEnergies, noted that following the Ubeta project, which is set to be established in 2024 and expected to come online next year, the Ima field once again demonstrates our ability to discover new gas resources at low cost and with low emissions. This success has also been aided by incentives provided by the Nigerian government for the development of non-associated gas.
