The USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) departed from its home port in San Diego on Sunday and is en route to the Persian Gulf. This carrier is being sent to the region with 10,000 Navy and Marine Corps personnel, indicating an increase in U.S. military options should President Donald Trump decide to escalate attacks on Iran.

Number of Aircraft Carriers in the Region

With the arrival of the USS Theodore Roosevelt in the Persian Gulf, the United States could have three aircraft carrier strike groups in the region for the first time since late April. According to sources, the USS George Washington remains in the area, while the USS George H.W. Bush has temporarily left the region. The last time the United States had three aircraft carrier strike groups in the Middle East was in 2003 at the beginning of the Iraq War.

Military and Economic Impacts

Advertising related to military movements in the Middle East and the increased likelihood of military strikes against Iran could have significant impacts on the oil market. Brent crude oil prices have risen to $102.74 per barrel, reflecting concerns over military action. Meanwhile, the United States has sent two additional missile systems to Qatar and Saudi Arabia in recent weeks to protect oil and gas facilities.

Ronald O'Rourke, a naval analyst, emphasizes that maintaining three carriers in the region could put significant pressure on the Navy. He notes that sustaining even a two-carrier presence in the region for an extended period can be challenging, and this time maintaining three carriers is considerably more difficult.

While efforts have been made in recent months to revive diplomatic negotiations, the war is currently in its eighth month, and talks to end it remain stalled. Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, recently indicated in private discussions that Tehran is ready to restore access for nuclear inspectors to the bombed facilities in exchange for a reduction in sanctions.
