An incident on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) on September 28, 2026, resulted in injuries to four personnel aboard the ship. The incident occurred during aircraft recovery operations off the coast of Virginia, and according to the United States Navy, two Navy pilots ejected from their aircraft and were quickly recovered by search and rescue teams.

Incident Details

The United States Navy stated in a release that both pilots were safely returned to the ship for medical evaluation. Additionally, four personnel aboard the ship were injured in the incident and are currently receiving medical care. One sailor was transferred to a hospital in the Norfolk area, and his injuries are not life-threatening.

Operations and Ship Status

According to reports, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower was undergoing initial qualification phases after completing its previous maintenance period in July. This ship, which was commissioned in 1977, serves as the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 2. With nearly five decades of service, this ship has undergone several major overhauls, and the United States Navy plans to replace it with the new USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-80).

Construction of the new ship began in 2017, and its delivery, initially scheduled for 2028, has been delayed several times. Current projections indicate that this warship will be in service by 2031.

Ship Operational History

The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower participated in military operations in the Middle East from November 2023 to June 2024, leading the United States' response to Houthi forces. After returning to Virginia in July 2024, the ship is currently completing its maintenance period. Meanwhile, the USS Theodore Roosevelt quietly departed San Diego on September 27. This ship has been deployed before the anticipated return of the USS Abraham Lincoln to California after its lengthy tour in the Middle East.

Speculation suggests that the Roosevelt will be utilized to replace the USS George Washington, which has been operating in the region since August.
