The PanStar Acro container ship from South Korea returned to Busan on October 13, 2026, after completing its first commercial round trip to Europe via the Arctic route. This ship, with a capacity of 2758 TEU, spent approximately 20 days traveling on the northern route during this 50-day journey, which included stops at the ports of Felixstowe, Rotterdam, and Gdansk. This duration is nearly one-third faster than a similar journey through the Suez Canal.
Challenges and Economic Questions
The South Korean government welcomed this journey while questions remain about securing return cargo after unloading the shipment in Europe. The PanStar Acro departed with 737 TEU of export cargo, while the initial target was 1300 TEU, and returned with 1743 TEU of empty containers. These figures highlight the challenges present in this new trade route.

Political and Diplomatic Messages
The President of South Korea, Lee Jae Myung, emphasized the importance of maintaining sanction and diplomatic principles during the welcoming ceremony for this ship, asserting that South Korea will adhere to its international commitments. This is while the development of this trade route requires cooperation with Russia, which is itself under international sanctions. Lee also noted that diplomacy with adversaries is essential and that South Korea's national interests must be considered.
This journey also reflects the changing dynamics in South Korea-Russia relations. It has recently been reported that South Korea sent over 176,000 tons of petroleum products to Russia in July and August, including shipments belonging to vessels under Western sanctions. South Korea has claimed that these exports do not constitute a violation of laws in themselves, but is investigating the possibility of violations.
In this context, the Busan-based shipping management company IOB has begun operations with four liquefied natural gas carriers and plans to add three to six more ships with higher ice class next year. The company is gradually establishing business connections with the Russian gas producer Novatek and the northern route, which is under Western sanctions.
