The oil tanker Stena DrillMAX, owned by Stena Drilling, has recently departed from a Spanish port in the Canary Islands towards Namibia. This tanker, built in 2008, is currently being prepared to start its new activities in the waters of Namibia.
Details of the Stena DrillMAX Mission
Stena DrillMAX has set sail from the port of Las Palmas towards Namibia to begin its new operations. This tanker will soon be transferred to the PEL 39 field, which is managed by Shell in collaboration with QatarEnergy and NAMCOR. Specific information about the particular well that this tanker is set to work on is not available, but it is expected that this mission will be related to assessing the results of the Merlin discovery, which indicates good reservoir quality with light oil and limited associated gas.

Technical Features of Stena DrillMAX
The Stena DrillMAX oil tanker, designed as a drilling unit for harsh conditions, has the capability to drill in water depths of up to 10,000 feet and can drill to a maximum depth of 35,000 feet. This tanker is considered a suitable option for large operations due to its capacity to accommodate 180 people. Additionally, this unit has been recognized as the first tanker in this field for receiving the DNV’s Abate (P) score in December 2023.
After completing operations in Namibia, it is expected that Stena DrillMAX will be transferred to its mission with Energean in the Mediterranean Sea. This transfer reflects Stena Drilling's careful and extensive planning in exploiting oil resources in various regions.
Stena Drilling operates its drilling fleet in various geographical areas. For example, the Stena IceMAX tanker, built in 2012, has recently completed a three-well drilling campaign in the western Mediterranean region of Egypt. These movements demonstrate Stena Drilling's commitment to expanding its activities in the oil and drilling industry.
