The import of electric and hybrid cars has encountered serious challenges, as the rising exchange rate and the total costs of imports have limited access to these products for consumers. In a situation where the main goal of policymakers is to reduce fuel consumption and manage energy imbalance, the import of economical and low-consumption cars has gained high importance.
Economic Challenges in Car Imports
The increase in the exchange rate has directly affected the cost of importing electric and hybrid cars, resulting in even economical products being offered in the Iranian market at prices close to semi-luxury or luxury products. This trend could contradict the philosophy of developing electric and hybrid cars, as only if these products are accessible to a wide segment of society can they help reduce fuel consumption.
Need for Targeted Government Support
For electric and hybrid cars to become part of the country's response to fuel imbalance, policymakers must take more serious actions regarding imports. Government support for the import of these cars must go beyond mere slogans and transform into a set of specific incentives in the areas of tariffs, taxes, currency provision, and facilitation of the import process. Additionally, supporting domestic production of electric and hybrid cars can also help reduce costs and increase access to these products.
Ultimately, if electric and hybrid cars are to be proposed as a solution to the energy imbalance in the country, they must be designed to be accessible to consumers. The entry of a limited number of these cars at high prices alone cannot significantly change fuel consumption patterns.
