The Global Tanker Shortage Has Intensified

The global tanker shortage has intensified significantly, raising oil transportation costs considerably. According to reports, the cost of chartering a tanker from the United States to China is now higher than the cost of launching a rocket into space. This situation has arisen due to increased demand for tankers and supply constraints caused by regional crises.

Factors Affecting the Increase in Transportation Costs

Oil trade from the Strait of Hormuz is heavily influenced by political and military developments in the region. With the increase in oil exports from this strait returning to 80 percent of pre-war levels, the tanker market is facing serious challenges. Experts say that currently, oil transportation costs have reached their highest level since the introduction of large tankers to the market in the 1960s.

Economic Consequences for Oil Producers

The increase in transportation costs means higher crude oil prices for buyers, which leads to reduced profit margins for refiners and inflationary pressures in the energy market. Oil producers in the Middle East are heavily reliant on transporting oil from the Strait of Hormuz and transferring it to other ships. This has resulted in increased travel times and reduced efficiency of the global tanker fleet.

Additionally, Iran's attacks on ships and the need for repairs have further reduced fleet capacity, forcing some vessels to travel longer distances to avoid Houthi attacks. These factors have significantly impacted transportation costs and caused severe fluctuations in the tanker market.

Middle Eastern oil producers, including Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait, are seeking to purchase tankers and enter long-term contracts to protect themselves against price volatility. Meanwhile, the value of tankers in the second-hand market has reached a record $240 million, which is 60 percent higher than last year.

Overall, these conditions not only affect oil prices but also impact the economic situation of producing countries and buyers. Given the existing challenges, it is expected that the tanker market will remain under pressure and transportation costs will significantly increase.
