The Navy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced today that it has seized an American autonomous underwater vehicle model Remus 600 in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the IRGC's statement, this vehicle was on an intelligence mission, and specialists are extracting and recovering its data.
Consequences of the Seizure on the Energy Market
This news comes at a time when tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have escalated again. Iran had previously proposed a plan to reopen this route and resume negotiations within a seven-day framework, but this proposal was rejected by Donald Trump. These developments could have a significant impact on the oil and gold markets. The Strait of Hormuz, as one of the key energy transit routes in the world, means that any tension there can affect oil prices.
The U.S. Government and Economic Impacts
Following these developments, Brent oil prices reached $106.60 on Thursday, but on Friday, they fell by about 2.1% to $104.32. If new tensions drive oil prices up again, concerns about inflation and Treasury yields may intensify. Alongside this, the gold market will also be affected by these developments, as demand for safe assets typically rises during times of heightened tensions.
On the other hand, the price of 18-carat gold has reached nearly 24 million tomans. Currently, each gram of 18-carat gold is trading at 23 million and 985 thousand tomans. Meanwhile, the free dollar is active in the market at a rate of 235 thousand and 285 tomans. Analysts believe that the dollar's reaction to the political and economic developments in Iran will be one of the determining factors for gold prices in the coming days.
Given the rising tensions, the gold market may face increased demand for safe assets. However, at the same time, positive news about de-escalation or progress in negotiations could further pressure the currency and gold markets. Meanwhile, U.S. economic data will also be monitored in the new week. Reports related to employment and personal consumption expenditures could influence Federal Reserve economic policies and, consequently, gold prices.
