Royal Caribbean has recently announced its plans to invest $3 billion in the Sandals and Beaches brand. Founded in 1981, this brand has 17 luxury resorts and three family resorts in various Caribbean countries including Jamaica, the Bahamas, and Saint Lucia.

Investment Details and Management Structure

This deal brings the total value of the Sandals brand to $6 billion, and it is expected that Adam Stewart, the son of the brand's founder, will remain as CEO and a board member under the joint leadership of himself and Jason Liberty, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean. The deal is set to be finalized in 2027.

The two companies also announced that they are working to identify opportunities for expanding distribution and increasing engagement with guests, as well as helping travelers discover the vacation experiences offered by both brands. This collaboration aims to create new opportunities for the continued growth of the Sandals and Beaches brands.

Development Outlook and Challenges

The Sandals and Beaches brands are planning to accelerate their expansion, while Royal Caribbean continues to expand into a neighboring vacation category. The two executives also discussed opportunities to link loyalty programs, and it seems that this collaboration could assist destinations that may be offered to cruise travelers.

However, Royal Caribbean faces challenges in forecasting its growth. The company has lowered its growth projections and pointed to uncertainties in the U.S. economy and decreased demand for European cruises. Analysts also believe that the Caribbean sector may face oversupply due to the rapid construction of new high-capacity cruise ships.

The Sandals brand has been put up for sale several times and was proposed for sale in 2019 as part of an estate planning process for its founder, Gordon "Butch" Stewart. The brand once again resumed the sales process in 2025 and considered financial advisors for this purpose.

The history of the cruise industry shows that it has often turned to hotels. In the 1980s, Carnival Resort purchased a property in the Bahamas and transformed it into the Crystal Palace Hotel and Casino, but this project ultimately failed.
