On October 25, 2023, the captain and second officer of the oil tanker UHL Freedom were rescued in the North Sea following a severe storm in the area. This oil tanker was specifically transporting cargo for offshore wind farms and was operating 18 miles off the coast of the Netherlands, near the Schiermonnikoog area.

Weather Conditions and Problems Encountered

The weather conditions on this day were extremely unfavorable, with reports indicating winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 miles per hour and severe storms hitting 70 to 80 miles per hour. This situation resulted in waves reaching heights of 5 meters (over 16 feet). The captain of the UHL Freedom was forced to send a Mayday message due to these conditions.

According to the ship's owners, United Heavy Lift, the vessel was attempting to reposition the anchor and turn towards the sea when it suddenly experienced severe and uncontrollable movements. This caused the captain and second officer to sustain injuries while the ship was in motion. The report completely refutes the claims made by Dutch rescue services regarding engine problems on the ship.

Rescue and Transfer to Hospital

After the Mayday message was issued, Dutch rescue boats and a German rescue boat were dispatched to the oil tanker. A Dutch rescue helicopter was able to extract the captain and second officer from the ship and transfer them to the hospital. The captain received treatment for injuries sustained due to adverse weather conditions, while the second officer was discharged after receiving necessary treatment.

Initially, it was reported that five crew members had been injured, but this number was later reduced to three, with the third individual not requiring rescue. After stabilizing the front of the ship and completing the anchor repositioning operation, the UHL Freedom headed towards the port of Emden.

Currently, the UHL Freedom is docked at a port in Germany, and the Dutch rescue boat Guardian remains nearby. This incident highlights the dangers associated with maritime activities in adverse weather conditions and underscores the importance of safety and preparedness in such situations.
