The oil tanker Virgo Transport 8, with 243 passengers, capsized in the Java Sea under adverse weather conditions. This incident occurred on the morning of Sunday, September 13, 2026, and so far, 108 of the passengers have been rescued. Currently, the search for the other 129 individuals who are still missing continues.
Details of the Incident and Rescue Operations
According to officials, the oil tanker was en route from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan. The weather conditions at the time of capsizing, with high waves and strong winds, have severely impacted the search operations. Mohammad Sifi, head of the National Rescue Agency, announced that 622 personnel, including coast guard and navy forces, have been dispatched to the scene to rescue the passengers. Additionally, 17 ships, five helicopters, and planes have been deployed for the search operation.
Challenges in the Search and Status of the Missing
Officials have stated that the adverse weather conditions are preventing rescuers from boarding the capsized oil tanker. Arianto Erdi, another official from the rescue agency, noted that the search for the missing individuals is difficult due to the weather conditions, and none of the 129 missing persons have been found by Monday afternoon. He added that in this area, waves have reached heights of up to three meters, and the weather conditions are so bad that the rescue operations have been delayed.
The Minister of Transportation, Dudi Purwagandhi, emphasized that this oil tanker had a capacity to carry 500 passengers and therefore was not overloaded. This incident occurred in the Java Sea, which has previously witnessed some of the deadliest maritime disasters in Indonesia.
