Artemis Technologies, based in Belfast, has sold a special version of its hydrofoil electric boat to Jacobsen Pilot Service at the Port of Long Beach. This boat, named EF-12, is recognized as the world's first pilot boat that combines hydrofoil technology with electric propulsion.
Unique Features of EF-12
This boat, which hit the market in June 2026, can reach speeds of up to 32 knots and can carry four passengers for 40 nautical miles at cruising speed. Its unique hydrofoil system design provides high control over the boat's turning, which is crucial when coming into contact with a ship's hull and then separating from it.

Environmental and Economic Benefits
The use of the EF-12 boat will significantly reduce fuel costs. It is estimated that this boat will save about 40,000 gallons of diesel annually, equivalent to over $200,000 at current prices. Additionally, this boat will help reduce 400 tons of CO2 emissions per year. For the Port of Long Beach, this boat means a reduction in NOx, SOx, and PM emissions, all of which are primary targets for improving air quality.
The Port of Long Beach is financially supporting the purchase of this Artemis boat through the California state port and transportation infrastructure program. This port has $380 million from two grants of this program and is using these resources to pursue initiatives that eliminate harmful gas emissions and improve rail infrastructure.
