The Port of Los Angeles set a new record in its 118-year history by moving 1,042,652 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in September 2023. This volume of movement is over 20,000 TEUs more than the previous record set in July 2025 and is recognized as the busiest month in the port's history.

Increased Consumer Demand and Changes in Global Trade Routes

This record reflects strong consumer demand and changes in global trade routes that have contributed to the increase in cargo volumes at the busiest container port in the United States. In September, heavy cargo imports reached 545,696 TEUs, a 19 percent increase compared to last year, while exports also saw a 10 percent increase to 125,751 TEUs. The movement of empty containers also reached approximately 371,206 TEUs, setting a new monthly record.

Factors Influencing Increased Cargo Volume

The port's executive director, Gene Serka, pointed to factors such as reduced uncertainty regarding tariffs and increased consumer demand. With tariffs decreasing from this year's high levels, importers have been able to replenish their inventories. Additionally, ongoing high fuel costs and disruptions in the Suez and Panama Canal routes have contributed to the increase in cargo volume.

The results indicate a very strong shipping season, with cargo volumes consistently exceeding expectations. In September, the National Retail Federation raised its import forecast, stating that September would be the busiest month of the year for container imports at major U.S. ports.

Challenges Facing Global Shipping

Despite the new records, challenges such as tariffs, high fuel costs, and geopolitical disruptions continue to put pressure on the global shipping industry. These challenges have complicated cargo volume forecasts and led carriers to adjust their traditional strategies and shipping routes.

In the first nine months of 2023, the Port of Los Angeles moved nearly 8.1 million TEUs, representing an increase of over 3 percent compared to the same period last year. The future of this trend remains uncertain due to anticipated declines in import volumes in the coming months. Nevertheless, the Port of Los Angeles continues to operate at a historic pace.

Serka stated at his monthly press conference, "Our dockworkers and supply chain partners have done an outstanding job managing these record volumes and maintaining the flow of cargo. Our focus is simple: finish the year strong and serve our customers."
