NorthStandard has collaborated with SGM Technology to provide the PntGuard™ platform for real-time authentication of vessel position signals under preferential conditions to its members. This initiative aims to assist members in facing instances of GNSS disruption and spoofing.
GNSS Disruption and Its Threats
GNSS disruption and spoofing have increasingly become prevalent in maritime transport, threatening security by interrupting, disrupting, and even invalidating the information that crews rely on for navigation and situational awareness. This also creates compliance and claims-related risks for owners and operators.

Benefits of PntGuard for Maritime Navigation
The PntGuard platform is built on the positioning, navigation, and timing (APNT) solution from NAL Technologies (Naltec) that utilizes the Iridium® PNT satellite service. This system continuously provides vessel positions reliably and independently of GNSS. PntGuard aids in spoof detection and overcoming disruptions, keeping vessels safely on their course. Naltec's APNT technology has been proven over more than 10 years by commercial and defense organizations, with thousands of devices in use.
Colin Gillespie, Global Head of Loss Prevention at NorthStandard, stated that the organization’s strategy to assist its members in leveraging digitalization capabilities has led to significant benefits in travel safety and operational decision-making. He added, "At a time when GNSS integrity is being threatened like never before, PntGuard provides early warning of disruption events and supports navigational resilience and situational awareness."
Iskander Vick, Business Director at SGM Technology, noted that PntGuard reports the true position of the vessel when GNSS is disrupted, ensuring confidence, safety, and control for every voyage. He also pointed out that GNSS disruption is no longer limited to conflict zones, and spoofing and disruption globally affect commercial transport.
