RWE, in collaboration with Ampelmann, is enhancing its offshore turbine maintenance services using heavy drones. This project, located at Triton Knoll in the North Sea, is specifically designed to increase efficiency and reduce costs.

Project Details

The project was completed in six weeks, during which Ampelmann's fleet of drones transported over nine tons of cargo from the deck to the tops of the turbines. This operation included more than 250 flights with loads of up to 80 kilograms. Before the technical teams arrived, the drones placed parts, safety equipment, and tools at designated points on the turbines, and at the end of the work, they collected the equipment.

Benefits of Using Drones

This method is particularly efficient due to the reduced need for vessel movement and the use of cranes. With the use of drones, operations can even take place at night, which means an increase in the productive working time of technicians by 15 to 20 percent. Thijs van T. Glach, business developer at Ampelmann, stated that night work allows for the vessel's downtime to be converted into productive work, enabling continuous electricity generation.

RWE's engineering manager, Morten Christensen, also expressed satisfaction with the results of this project and highlighted the capabilities of drones in executing complex operations and reducing delivery times. This trend signifies transformations in the renewable energy sector, particularly in the maintenance and repair of wind turbines.

Future Outlook

The use of modern technologies such as drones in the energy sector can help reduce costs and increase efficiency. This trend is not only applicable to offshore projects but can also be expanded to other areas of energy. Given the ongoing advancements in drone technology, these tools are expected to play a significant role in the future of the energy industry.
