Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), one of the largest shipping companies in Japan, has signed a purchase agreement to acquire 30% of the shares in the Trudvang carbon storage project in Norway. This project, managed by Vår Energi, aims to develop a complete value chain in carbon storage and CO2 transport.

Details of the Agreement and Project Goals

The agreement includes 30% of the exploration rights for CO2 storage in license EXL007. Nippon Yusen Kaisha plans to establish a wholly-owned subsidiary in Norway to complete this transaction, which is subject to regulatory approvals and customary finalization conditions.

NYK has expressed that participation in this project allows them to go beyond maritime transport and create capabilities in the broader carbon storage value chain. Through this partnership, NYK seeks to gather knowledge and practical experience in project development as well as the technical and commercial aspects of the CO2 transport and storage business.

Technical and Commercial Aspects of the Project

The Trudvang project aims to develop a transport and storage business that transfers CO2 obtained from industrial producers in Europe for injection and permanent storage in an offshore geological structure. Currently, technical and commercial studies are underway to prepare for the commercialization of this project.

Vår Energi acts as the operator of this project, and INPEX Idemitsu Norge also participates as a partner in this project. Such collaborations represent a transformation in new technologies and sustainable strategies in the shipping and energy industry.
