Morocco has signed a new contract with APM Terminals for the development of the third phase of Tangier Med Port. This contract is part of the country's efforts to increase its container capacity and enhance its role as a transshipment port in Europe and other key routes.

Details of the New Projects

This new project is recognized as part of Morocco's "Royal Vision" to strengthen the country's port system in order to increase competitiveness against the reconstruction of global value chains. The government has stated that these projects will contribute to national growth and regional development, creating new job opportunities through equitable distribution of public investments and attracting private investment.

Tangier Med Port 1 was commissioned in July 2007 and currently has an annual capacity of 1.8 million TEU. The second phase of this port began in June 2019 and was commissioned with an investment of over 800 million dollars. The new development projects started in 2021 and are expected to be completed by December 2024, increasing the terminal's total capacity to 5.2 million TEU per year.

New Capacity and Investments

The newly signed contract with the government includes the imminent launch of Tangier Med Port 3. This new port, located west of Tangier Med Port 2, is designed to be 1,200 meters long with an additional capacity of 4.5 million containers per year. The government anticipates that this project will lead to an investment of nearly 2.2 million dollars.

The development project for Tangier Med Port 3 is underway alongside the expansion of the passenger port and the roll-on/roll-off port. Upon completion of these projects, the total capacity of Tangier Med Port may reach 20 million containers, placing it among the top 10 ports globally. Additionally, Morocco is looking to leverage transport routes to bypass the European Union's carbon tariffs.

Nador West Med Port, as the second largest port project in Morocco, is also under development and is expected to reach a capacity of 3.5 million containers.
