Minesto, a Swedish marine energy developer, has signed an agreement with Morteza Capital to develop tidal energy business opportunities in the Maldives. This agreement represents Minesto's efforts to transition towards renewable energy sources and reduce dependence on fossil fuels in island communities.
Challenges of Electrifying Islands
Marty Edlund, CEO of Minesto, stated: "Transitioning from diesel-based electricity generation for island communities is challenging, especially in locations where preserving the natural environment is essential for the local economy." He emphasized that the Maldives is a market where Minesto's technology can make a real difference.
Collaboration and Market Development Strategy
As part of its market entry strategy, Minesto seeks to combine its tidal energy technology and knowledge with local expertise and commercial development capabilities. The company has also secured necessary funding from the Nordic Project Fund (Nopef) to support market development activities in the Maldives.
Minesto and Morteza Capital are working to integrate innovative tidal energy technology with local networks, investment expertise, and project development capabilities, aiming to create a pathway for tidal energy commercial projects. Ghali Mortala, CEO of Morteza Capital, remarked: "The Maldives has ambitious and challenging renewable goals to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels."
Minesto's International Developments
The agreement with Morteza Capital is part of Minesto's broader strategy to accelerate the development of international markets through long-term collaborations with local and regional developers and investors. The company has previously signed an agreement with Chilean energy project developer Trayen Power to collaborate on the development of tidal energy and ocean current projects in Chile.
Minesto has also been selected as part of a government-supported initiative to participate in the Sweden-Indonesia Sustainability Partnership (SISP) to accelerate tidal energy development in Indonesia.
