Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force (NYK) has ordered a new Service Operation Vessel (SOV) to strengthen its business in the offshore wind energy sector. This 89-meter vessel, to be built by the PaxOcean Group, a member of the Kuok Maritime Group, is designed to support the construction, operation, and maintenance of offshore wind farms in the Asia-Pacific region.

Details of the New SOV

This new vessel will serve as a marine base for accommodating personnel and providing logistical services, with a capacity to host 120 people. The vessel will be equipped with a dynamic positioning system that can automatically calculate external forces such as wind and tides, maintaining its position at sea using thrusters and other propulsion devices. Additionally, this vessel will feature a dual x-stern design developed by Ulstein, enhancing maneuverability and positioning performance.

Expansion of Activities in the Global Wind Energy Market

In recent years, NYK has actively expanded its activities in the offshore wind energy sector. Last year, the company entered the European market and invested in Northern Offshore Group (NOG), an operator of crew transfer vessels with over 60 ships in the global offshore wind energy industry. This investment was made to gain important operational experience for the future expansion of wind energy in waters near Japan.

The new SOV is set to be deployed in offshore wind energy projects in Taiwan and throughout the Asia-Pacific region. NYK's collaboration with Taiwan-based IOVTEC and Hsin Chien Marine aims to ensure the safe and reliable operation of this vessel and to assist in the continued development of the offshore wind energy industry.

Scheduled for delivery in 2029, this vessel represents another step in NYK's expansion from "ocean for transport" to "ocean as a workplace." NYK is focused on strengthening its position in this growing market by concentrating on the value chain of wind energy.
