Italy is moving towards one of the largest and most advanced naval programs in Europe by signing a $4.2 billion contract for the construction of two next-generation DDX destroyers. These destroyers are seen as a milestone in Italy's efforts to modernize its navy and will be equipped with state-of-the-art technologies.
DDX Project Details
These destroyers will be designed and developed by Fincantieri, and it is expected that about €1.8 billion (of which approximately €800 million is allocated for additional options) will be assigned to this company from the project. Additionally, Leonardo will be responsible for the design and development of the combat systems, with around €1.7 billion (including €480 million for additional options) of the contract going to this company. The new combat system will include a next-generation electronic warfare suite developed by the Elt group.

Technical Specifications of DDX Destroyers
The DDX destroyers are designed to be 180 meters long and weigh 13,500 tons, capable of sailing 4,000 nautical miles. These destroyers will operate with a crew of 251 and will replace the Durand de la Penne class destroyers, which were commissioned in 1992. The order for the first DDX destroyer has been placed, with delivery planned for 2033, while the delivery of the second destroyer is considered an option for 2035.
These destroyers are introduced as a new generation of complex warships designed to address increasing complexities, rapid technological evolution, and greater integration across various operational domains. The new destroyers will leverage the Navis Sapens concept from Fincantieri, which aims to enhance communication with shore and improve the digital connectivity of systems.
These digital destroyers are designed to operate in highly connected multinational forces, providing high levels of digitalization, automation, and integration among sensors, weapon systems, and multi-domain command and control systems, as well as platform management. The architecture of the combat system will also be developed to ensure high levels of interoperability and information sharing.
The DDX destroyers will be equipped with a high-power digital AESA radar and MBDA weapon systems. These units will provide integrated air and missile defense (IAMD) against missile, ballistic, and hypersonic threats. These features reflect Italy's efforts to enhance its defense capabilities and modernize its navy.
