The volume of gas sent from Iran through the pipeline to Turkey in August increased by 9.1 percent compared to the same period last year, reaching 916.3 million cubic meters. This increase occurred despite Turkey's total natural gas imports in August reaching about 2.8 billion cubic meters, showing a 32.7 percent decrease compared to last year.

Increasing Trend of Iran's Exports

Published statistics show that Iran's share of the Turkish gas market increased from 20.4 percent in August last year to 33 percent in August this year. This significant growth occurred while Azerbaijan, with exports of 752.4 million cubic meters of gas, was the second-largest supplier of natural gas to Turkey during this period. Azerbaijan's gas exports also decreased by 28.2 percent compared to last year.

Russia's gas exports to Turkey also fell by 60.6 percent to 723.1 million cubic meters, and the country's share of Turkey's total gas imports decreased from 44.5 percent to 26.1 percent. These changes indicate a significant reduction in Turkey's dependence on Russian gas and an increase in Iran's share in the gas market of this country.

Analysis of Gas Consumption in Turkey

Turkey also imported 383.8 million cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Algeria in August, which is a 28.5 percent increase compared to August last year. In contrast, the United States, which exported 100.5 million cubic meters of gas to Turkey during the same period last year, had no exports to this country in August this year.

Turkey's natural gas consumption in this month decreased by 22 percent to about 2.7 billion cubic meters. Of the total gas consumption in the country, 1.1 billion cubic meters was allocated to the industrial sector, and the energy conversion sector, including power plants, consumed 886 million cubic meters of gas. The residential sector's consumption was also reported to be 326 million cubic meters.

Turkey's natural gas reserves at the end of August reached 5.8 billion cubic meters, which includes 5.5 billion cubic meters of gas stored in underground reservoirs and 304 million cubic meters at LNG terminals.

In the oil sector, Turkey's imports of crude oil and petroleum products in August increased by 2.3 percent compared to the same period last year, reaching 4.5 million tons. Crude oil imports decreased by 1.1 percent to 2.8 million tons, but diesel imports increased by 9 percent to 1.2 million tons.

Russia was the largest supplier to Turkey, exporting 1.3 million tons of oil and petroleum products. Iraq and Saudi Arabia followed with 553 thousand and 812 tons and 335 thousand and 622 tons, respectively. Additionally, Turkey's petroleum product exports decreased by 34.8 percent to 793 thousand and 364 tons.

These statistics indicate that despite the decrease in gas imports and consumption in Turkey, Iran's share of the gas market in this country is increasing. This trend could strengthen Iran's position as one of the main energy suppliers in the region.
