The installed capacity of renewable power plants in Iran has reached 6,151 megawatts. This figure represents a significant growth in clean electricity production and efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Especially in recent months, with the addition of new capacities, renewable electricity production has reached a high level.

Increase in Renewable Electricity Production

According to the provided statistics, renewable electricity production in 2026 has reached 4 billion 548 million kilowatt-hours. This level of production not only meets the annual electricity consumption of over 1.2 million households but also results in a saving of 1.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas and prevents the emission of about 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide. Specifically, in September, renewable power plants produced 930 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, indicating a significant acceleration in the development of clean energy.

Challenges in Managing Electricity Imbalance

However, the increase in installed capacity alone does not mean that the electricity imbalance is resolved. The effectiveness of renewable power plants depends on production timing, grid stability, the possibility of electricity storage, and coordination with consumption patterns. Especially solar power plants, which produce during the day, while part of the peak consumption may continue after sunset. Therefore, capacity development must be pursued simultaneously with strengthening the grid and load management solutions.

Considering that renewable electricity production has reached a high level during the warm months of the year, this production can alleviate some of the pressure on thermal power plants. To assess the actual role of clean energy in managing the imbalance, it must be determined how much of this production has been injected into the grid during peak load hours.

The increase in the country's renewable capacity to over 6,000 megawatts and the registration of monthly production of 930 million kilowatt-hours in September is a sign of the expanding role of clean electricity in Iran's energy mix. However, the measure of success is not just the number of installed megawatts; rather, the reliability of electricity, reduction in fossil fuel consumption, and the share of clean energy in covering peak loads are important.

The development of renewable power plants becomes a sustainable achievement when three paths progress simultaneously: facilitating investment and financing for projects, developing the grid and storage equipment to manage production fluctuations, and reforming consumption mechanisms while encouraging consumers to shift their load to hours of higher solar electricity production.
