A.P. Moller Capital, the investment management arm of the A.P. Moller Group, is expanding its portfolio of investments in ports and logistics. In its latest move, this investment manager, which has approximately $2 billion in assets under management, has announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire Portek International, based in Singapore, from Mitsui & Co.

Details about Portek International

Portek is a terminal operator and engineering company that operates in seven port terminals across Africa, Asia, and Europe. Founded in 1988, the company has a diverse portfolio of multipurpose terminals that serve local and international trade flows. Portek's terminals are located in countries including Algeria, Gabon, Indonesia, Latvia, Malta, and Vietnam.

Portek also provides port engineering services and operations and maintenance, particularly from Singapore and Indonesia. The company's terminals manage approximately seven million tons of bulk cargo, 700,000 containers, and about 90,000 vehicles annually.

Investment Outlook and Goals

Semih Gökmen, partner at A.P. Moller Capital, stated: "Portek aligns with our active ownership philosophy and investment strategy. It is an established business with a diverse portfolio of port operations that supports significant trade flows across three continents, backed by experienced local teams."

This investment allows A.P. Moller to participate in some of the fastest-growing shipping markets, including Vietnam, where Portek operates as an indirect shareholder in the owner and operator of the Vietnam International Container Terminal (VICT). This terminal is recognized as an advanced port project in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Portek is also active in terminal management in Latvia, Indonesia, and Malta, as well as in Algeria and two terminals in Gabon.

Upon completion of this acquisition, A.P. Moller Capital has stated that it intends to work closely with Portek's local teams to build on the company's existing capabilities and support its next stage of development. This investor will pay special attention to operational performance, governance, safety, capital discipline, and environmental performance, including planning for greenhouse gas emission reductions.

This acquisition comes just weeks after A.P. Moller Capital announced that it had signed an agreement to acquire a majority stake in Euroports Group. This group operates over 50 deep-sea and inland port terminals in 10 European countries and China.

The investment firm has also recently received legal approvals for a deal signed in February 2025 to acquire a 51% stake in the port operator BERGÉ. A.P. Moller Capital has stated that through this partnership, it will help grow and develop BERGÉ to become the largest multipurpose port infrastructure company in Iberia and Latin America.

Given the growth of global trade and transportation, ports have become a hot investment area. In addition to shipping lines seeking to secure trade routes, investors have also been attracted to this sector due to strong growth profiles.
