Increase in Calls for Diesel Export Ban by Mike Rogers

Mike Rogers, the Republican candidate for the Michigan Senate, called for a "temporary ban on diesel exports" in a campaign ad, stating, "American energy should first help American families." This request has become a focal point in election discussions, particularly in the Midwestern agricultural states where diesel prices are a sensitive issue.

Potential Impacts of Export Ban

Energy analysts also warn that a ban on diesel exports may only temporarily lower prices in refining regions of the South and Midwest, but its effects on the national economy and global energy markets could be significant. Bob McNally from Rapidan Group said, "You will see a sudden drop in prices in Texas, Louisiana, and perhaps the Midwest, but then refiners will cut back on production to cope with the excess diesel, and prices will rise again."

Voices of Representatives and Senators

In this context, Representative Ashley Hinson (Republican from Iowa) also issued a statement calling for a "pause on diesel exports" and the creation of a "diesel assistance program" for truckers and farmers. Senator Chuck Grassley (Republican from Iowa) questioned why President Trump is not imposing export bans on diesel like the presidents of the 1970s. John Thune, the Senate Majority Leader (Republican from South Dakota), also stated that he is "ready to consider" a diesel export ban.

Analysts also pointed out that if refiners cut production, gasoline, jet fuel, and cargo fuel production will also decline. The Lipow Oil Institute also acknowledged that diesel exports are likely to increase global prices.

Rapidan stated that the likelihood of a diesel export ban being enacted is 35%, although McNally warns that such a restriction could have long-term effects on investor confidence. Currently, Russia, as one of the world's major diesel exporters, has imposed bans on diesel sales due to its energy industry's issues stemming from the Ukraine attacks, and Middle Eastern diesel exports have been limited due to war and infrastructure damage.
