Two tankers off the coast of the Black Sea in Romania have caught fire following a possible drone attack. The incident occurred on October 15, 2026, resulting in seven crew members from one of the tankers going missing and five others being rescued.

Details of the Fire Incident

According to reports, the tanker flying the flag of San Marino named "Wine Trader" caught fire 13 nautical miles southeast of the Sulina Canal, one mile outside Romanian waters. This tanker is currently searching for the missing crew members. The Romanian Ministry of Internal Affairs has announced that two Black Hawk helicopters and two vessels with medical personnel have been dispatched for the search and rescue operation. However, adverse weather conditions and high waves have complicated the rescue efforts.

Drone Attacks and Their Consequences

The President of Romania, Nicolae Ciucă, has confirmed that two drones attacked these two tankers and they are currently awaiting more information regarding the source of these attacks. In this incident, the second tanker flying the Comoros flag named "Yara J" is also reported to be on fire, but all crew members of this tanker are safe.

These incidents occur amid increased attacks on cargo ships in the Black Sea, particularly following the Ukraine-Russia war. In the past 10 days, at least five other ships have also been attacked near the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria, with 23 sailors going missing in these attacks.

Global Implications and Maritime Security

The Romanian Foreign Minister, Oana Lungescu, stated at a security conference in Warsaw that the Black Sea is considered a global food artery, and this situation will severely impact grain exports from Romania, Ukraine, and Russia. She also emphasized the need for increased investments in deterrence and defense.

While NATO is establishing communication with Romanian officials, the Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Rumen Radev, has also announced that EU leaders are discussing a moratorium on attacks against civilian ships in the Black Sea. These developments reflect growing concerns about maritime transport security in the region.
