Equinor has successfully discovered gas in the Gulfaks South field, located 190 kilometers northwest of the city of Bergen. This discovery could produce up to 10.3 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe) and utilizes existing infrastructure on Norway's offshore platforms.

Details of the Gas Field Discovery

The exploratory well 34/10-D-4 BH, which was drilled as a side well in connection with the drilling of a production well, indicates the high potential of the Gulfaks field. This well was drilled by the Askeladden rig and is part of the Gulfaks production license, which is owned by three companies: Equinor, Petoro, and OMV.

According to operator data, between 0.5 million and 1.6 million cubic meters of recoverable oil equivalent have been identified, equivalent to 3.3 to 10.3 million barrels of oil. This discovery represents the success of a low-cost exploration process that could help maintain activity and production in the Gulfaks field.

Consequences and Future Outlook

Gunnar Eg, Vice President of Equinor in the Gulfaks field, emphasized the importance of this discovery, stating: “This discovery demonstrates that there is potential for discovering large resources with cost-effective exploratory wells. These barrels can help sustain activities and production in the Gulfaks field.”

This new discovery comes just a month after Equinor, along with Aker BP and Vår Energy, collaborated to search for large hydrocarbon discoveries off the coast of Norway. This team aims to work on 25 high-impact exploratory projects in the coming years. This initiative reflects the companies' commitment to expanding exploration activities and developing energy resources in Norway.
